Melanie Fiona's music flirts with the classic soul sound of artists like Sam Cooke and Gladys Knight. She calls herself, "an utter student of the game." But her song Give It To Me Right proves she's ready to graduate.
How do you describe your work?
“It’s my passion. It’s fun. It’s the thing I love to do most."
What three adjectives best describe you? “Happy. Strong. And I’m a little crazy. Funny, crazy. I don’t think people expect me to be as crazy as I am.”
Cats, dogs, birds … describe your pets? “I don’t have any pets anymore but I had two dogs. I loved the relationship that animals bring into your life but I’m definitely a dog person. I hate cats. I can’t lie.”
Favorite season? “My favorite season is summer. I feel like everything is alive and I love the sunshine. There is so much to do. It’s just fun, even when you’re working.”
Name a city you’d love to visit. Why? “Cairo, Egypt. I feel like it’s got so much history in that country and city. There is a great story to be told. I’d like to visit the Pyramids, the Sphinx.”
What’s the best thing about being single? “Truthfully, the best thing is you can learn so much about yourself. It’s a great time to establish who you are before you share that with someone else.”
Describe your ideal Girls’ Night Out. “It would have to involve shopping, although that would be a day out. Dinner. Dessert and really great conversation. I don’t do the club thing and random dating is not my thing. I gotta say, it would be really simple. Wine is great too.”
What’s the nicest thing a friend (or friends) have done for you? “We were just wrapping up from the album and a few of my friends surprised me and took me away to St. Martin for a vacation.”
What do you do for “Melanie time”? “I definitely sleep. I listen to music. When I can, the real “Melanie time” is when I’m around my friends and family at home.”
What’s the best advice you ever received? “The best advice was, it’s very simple, follow your gut. Follow your instincts. Believe. Especially in my career. If you kind of go against yourself, chances are you’ll be upset later. I’m a believer that you have to follow your gut.”
What quality do you admire most in a man? “I admire a responsible man and responsibility goes on so many different levels. A man who is not afraid to exercise responsibility without hesitation. You can depend on him if you need him.”
What quality do you admire most in a woman? “The emotional strength that we can find in ourselves. We’re a force to be reckoned with. I feel like the amount of emotional aspects we have to consider or encounter is the thing that makes us the beings that we are. We are designed genetically and socially to be up against and fulfill. That is a huge challenge and responsibility.”
Who are your real life heroes? “My parents, absolutely. They’ve done a great job of raising me and my brother and the story of what they had to do in their lives together and for us to get to this point.”
What is your guilty pleasure? “Trashy Blogs. I want to see what people are wearing even though I don’t want people to know what I’m wearing or doing!”
What is your biggest fear? “It’s gonna sound crazy but it’s something I want so badly for my life. It would be not having a family of my own. You never know what can happen and that’s something I want, very much so.”
If you could change one thing in your past, what would it be? “I would have never given up the piano. I didn’t appreciate what it was when I was a teenager. I hated practicing.”
Other than your own talents, what talent would you most like to have? “I would love to be able to either draw really well or I would love to be able to speak several languages.”
What is your motto? Or what words do you live by? “I’ve got a few. Whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. No one ever said it would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it. I’m kind of a mover and shaker and so one of the things I’ve learned to live by is learning to accept the things you can’t change.”
